There are no familiar signposts. There are no McDonald's. Hot water can be iffy in remote areas. But what you do see are people living in harmony, despite their hardships, embracing what they have: living their history, whether religious or cultural and balancing the needs of modernity with a rural, agricultural heritage that gives the country its charm and beauty.

All this provides a wonderful backdrop to a shockingly exotic land, bequeath with natural wonders, The Blue Nile Falls, the Simien Mountains, The Danakil Depression, the Awash Valley, and the Bale Mountains. During a routine visit to Alamata in Tigray, accompanying my wife on her rounds of hospital inspections (she works for the Clinton Foundation then), we were winding our way through hairpin turns when a whole family of baboons crossed our path. We're originally from New England, in the United States, so at first my only thought as I first glimpsed the baboon's movement was deer. And then I remembered, I'm in Africa!

On December 2008, I have taken over the management of an esteemed company, Experience Ethiopia Travel, the first private tourist agency in Ethiopia. Over the course of the last 16 years, EET built its reputation on adventure travel, leading trekking expeditions in the Simien Mountains and birding excursions throughout the country. Building on these strengths, I and a staff of experienced guides and tour operators have organized several new tours, which will appeal to the outdoor enthusiast and the history buff in equal measure. We are also offering a new experience in the Danakil Depression, a desert oasis, and a better way to get there, through Mekelle instead of driving up from Addis Ababa. And as always we provide the logistics to make sure your tour goes smoothly.

I am a lifelong traveler, having lived in Europe for several years and visited South America, Asia, and Africa on different trips and now call the city of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia my home. I am working now with well experienced management staffs and tour operators. Please join us for your next vacation. Come to the Horn, visit Ethiopia!

Another thing about us: all the profits from this agency go to a four-year college called the Mekelle Institute of Technology. The school, located in the northern province of Tigray, is modeled after an Indian government science and technology initiative to create centers of excellence. It was founded in 2002 and has a current (2010) student population of 475.

The students primarily come from the Tigray province and attend the school tuition free. So please, enjoy learning more about Ethiopia through our pages, and when its time to get serious about arranging your travel here, think of us and know that enjoying your vacation also has the added benefit of supporting a great school.
